Bulegoa z/b, Open Call for Residency 2018
Two proposals were selected for the Bulegoa z/b residency 2018: Espigadoras / Gleaners, by Claudia Pagès, and Negro fondo ultraterreno (Black Otherworldly Background) by Antonio Menchen. The jury made its decision in July 2018, members being José Ramón Ais (artist), Beatriz Herráez (art historian and curator) and the members of Bulegoa z/b, whose joint vote counted as one. Owing to the quality of the proposals we received, two were finally selected for residency. Claudia Pagés will carry out her residency in the last three months of 2018, and Antonio Menchen’s will take place in the first quarter of 2019.

The Bulegoa z/b residency aims to provide a space for the production of art and knowledge in different phases and at different levels in Bulegoa z/b. It runs for a period of no more than a month and is open to artists living in the Basque Autonomous Community or the rest of Spain. Resources provided include access to space, discourse and financing. The residency includes a public presentation of the artist’s work.

Claudia Pagès: Espigadoras / Gleaners
Claudia Pagès is beginning her residency at Bulegoa z/b. In it, she will be working on a new project provisionally titled Espigadoras / Gleaners in which she will be putting together a series of works as part of an investigation into speech, the creolization of speech, and contemporary forms of extractivism and gleaning, relating linguistic processes to models of socio-economic production.

The project focuses on mapping different areas where urban extraction processes, accumulation of discarded objects and gleaning take place. Beginning with the Encantes district in Barcelona, the artist will look for similar instances in Bilbao to make notes and scripts which might be activated performatively.

The artist has decided to take time to work with Andrea Rodrigo, with whom she will be collaborating during the residency at Bulegoa z/b.
