Como era gostoso o meu francês (Nelson Pereira dos Santos, 1971, 88 min.)

In Como era gostoso o meu francês, directed by Nelson Pereira dos Santos in 1971, most of the characters go naked, most of them speak in Tupi, and the meeting of different cultures and civilizations is so intensely stimulating that it ends up as cannibalism. Or perhaps not cannibalism, but anthropophagy – a very different cultural understanding of forms of approximation, exchange and integration to our own today. Inconsistency, the construction of memory, and non-assimilation become the unstable basis for social relationships. Perfect ‘food for thought’ for current times.

Pablo Lafuente (Portugalete, 1976) lives and works in London and São Paulo. He edits Afterall and is a professor at Central Saint Martins – University of the Arts, London. He was also a member of the curatorial team for the thirty-first Bienal de São Paulo (2014).
