SESSION 111, ILLEGAL_CINEMA

by

Screening of Space is The Place (John Coney, 1974, 80 min) followed by a discussion. Session proposed by Inés García.

Space is the place is that place from which the impossible can be imagined. An Afrofuturist mystical creation of resistance to white hegemony and oppression. In a world ruled by a reading of the intergalactic Tarot, a spaceship lands on planet Earth. SUN RA along with his band Arkestra have a mission: to use the power of jazz to change the world.

SUN RA was a great musician, composer, arranger and keyboard player. He was interested in alternative readings of the Bible and had a deep understanding of numerology and the history of Ancient Egypt. In his youth he was teletransported to Saturn where some beings inspired him to give up everything and dedicate himself to music, because in his own words: “I would speak [through music], and the world would listen”.

A proposal for Illegal_Cinema that arises from another continent and proposes the formation of extraordinary line-ups and new cosmic openings.

Inés García is an artist and filmmaker who develops installations, and short and feature length films. Her practice explores the creation of bridge-spaces that, through the representation of nature, myths and music, propose a journey between the real and the mystical, the individual and the collective. She is currently doing an artist residency at the Art OMI (New York), where she is developing a new project around the concept of the sphere.
