POS 3. SPACES OF/FOR ENCOUNTERING: NEREA CALVILLO, MASSIMILIANO CASU, MIGUEL MESA DEL CASTILLO

by

In our third session of Permanent Ordinary Seminar, Nerea Calvillo, Massimiliano Casu and Miguel Mesa del Castillo will be presenting Espacios de/para el encuentro. The Permanent Ordinary Seminar is a public collaborative programme by Bulegoa z/b and Sociología Ordinaria which will run in 2020-2021. It takes the form of different online and face-to-face conversations and encounters.

SPACES OF/FOR ENCOUNTERING
We will begin by accepting that there’s no neutral or inoffensive way to tackle this issue. And even if there were, we wouldn’t want it.

We will confess our premise. The idea that all spaces are simply a combination of light, volume and surfaces, inside and out, full and empty, leaves us with a bitter-tasting “Is that all? Is that what architecture’s contribution to collective life is reduced to?”

Luckily, the commonplace and ordinary (often unexpectedly) work their way into architectural spaces. Buildings, interior design and urbanism often acquire political characteristics when they become “entangled” in unforeseen relationships with other things, people, institutions, desires, technologies. Dancing encounters of production, dialogue, struggle, dispute and sometimes creation, that lead to unexpected, surprising programmes, workings and achievements.

Spaces Of/For Encountering is an attempt to consider architecture in times of technological distance and mediation, demanding that architecture be attentive to the commonplace in order to play its part in the future construction of a “good common world.”
