ESKUZ IDATZIAK, AHOZ JOSIAK WORKING GROUP:

Tuesday, 2025/05/27, 6:30 pm: On Opera as Method, with Rana Hamadeh.

Wednesday, 2025/05/28, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm & 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm (lunch at Bulegoa z/b): session of the eskuz idatziak, ahoz josiak working group.

Rana Hamadeh will map out the theoretical-aesthetic frameworks that ground the terminology, referential fields and the aesthetic logics of her works, as she unpacks several of her longstanding projects, including the Standard_Deviation series, The Ten Murders of Josephine series and the Alien Encounters project. Her talk will centre around her understanding of theatre, opera and ‘operatic labour’ as tools of ‘curatorial thinking’.

Rana Hamadeh’s presentation On Opera as Method is the first event of eskuz idatziak, ahoz josiak, a working group whose final aim is to write, imagine and realize an opera. Eskuz idatziak, ahoz josiak is the 2024-2026 edition of Space is the Place / The Place is Space. Initiated in 2018, the title of this Bulegoa z/b program paraphrases the 1974 Afrofuturist film by Sun Ra.

Rana Hamadeh is a visual, performance and sound artist whose work blurs the lines between theatre, film, sound, networked media and exhibition-making. Since 2016, she has been developing an ‘operatic practice’, experimenting particularly with sound composition – testing out models for extended/collective forms of thinking and study. Her years-long projects evolve in sequential chapters, thinking broadly through the epistemologies, economies and technologies of justice — understanding justice through the optics of measure, spectacle, translation, reproduction and machinic standardization.
