The seminar \u201cRoba da matti\u201d came out of a personal interest of mine in madness. With it, I would like to explore issues bordering on the psycopathological, madness, and psychiatric institutions. It sets up a dialogue between Silvano Agosti\u2019s documentary\u00a0Il volo<\/em>\u00a0(1975), psychoanalyst Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda \u00c1lvarez, and psychiatrist Fernando Colina; both of whose clinical practice questions means and manners of treating pathologies.<\/p>\n

I have been wanting to share Silvano Agosti\u2019s filmography for some time now, and to take it to Bilbao. Agosti is an Italian filmmaker and friend of mine. I had at first thought of showing his documentary\u00a0Il volo<\/em>\u00a0at an Illegal_cinema session in Bulegoa z\/b. Then I met Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda \u00c1lvarez, a psychoanalyst, at a seminar, and then through him, Fernando Colina, a psychiatrist. I read some of their books and thought it might be interesting to set up an encounter with them, using the film as a tool to work with. That was how the seminar \u201cRoba de matti\u201d (\u201cCrazy stuff\u201d), the title of which refers to an Italian colloquial expression, came about.<\/p>\n

Il volo<\/em>\u00a0is a documentary by Silvano Agosti from 1975, commissioned by psychiatrist Franco Basaglia. The film records a practical experience from the Trieste psychiatric ward during the anti-psychiatry movement, when a hundred patients left the ward and went on a plane trip. It proposes other ways to rethink the spaces surrounding madness and suggests ways of bringing change into psychiatric institutions. I made the video\u00a0Si vola<\/em>\u00a0in 2012 in reference to this film.<\/p>\n

Using a film as a departure point for a collective exercise in thinking, \u201cRoba da matti\u201d proposes we reconsider madness and how it extends into the\u00a0present<\/em>. In Agosti\u2019s words, \u201cMadness is the way people\u2019s lives are forced to organise themselves. Madness comes out of that restriction.\u201d The filmmaker also takes up Seneca\u2019s question, \u201cWho will heal those who believe themselves to be healthy?\u201d<\/p>\n

The seminar \u201cRoba da matti\u201d is a proposal by Susana Talayero. It will take place between 17.00 and 20.00.<\/p>\n

\nBIOGRAPHIES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Silvano Agosti\u00a0<\/strong>(Brescia, 1938). Defines himself as a human being, filmmaker and writer. He studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Roma, where he later taught film montage. In Moscow, he specialised in Eisenstein\u2019s work. After working with Marco Bellocchio on\u00a0I pugni in tasca<\/em>\u00a0(1967), he brought out the feature film\u00a0Il giardino della delizie<\/em>\u00a0(1971). His little-known filmography has been censored in Italy and is representative of filmmaking in the 70s that came out of a political commitment which extended into all aspects of film production. He has been running his cinema\u00a0Azurro Scipioni<\/em>, which is a reference for independent and art film in Rome for three years now. Films by him include\u00a0N.P.il segreto<\/em>\u00a0(1973),\u00a0Matti da slegare\u00a0<\/em>(1975),\u00a0D\u2019amore si vive<\/em>\u00a0(1984),\u00a0Quartiere<\/em>\u00a0(1987),\u00a0L\u2019uomo proiettile<\/em>\u00a0(1995), and\u00a0La seconda ombra<\/em>(2000).\u00a0http:\/\/www.silvanoagosti.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda \u00c1lvarez<\/strong>\u00a0(Le\u00f3n, 1960). Psychoanalyst and member of the World Psychoanalysis Association, he specialises in Clinical Psychology at the Rio Hortega de Valladolid University Hospital, where he does clinical work and teaches. He is committed to public health. Written works to date:\u00a0La invenci\u00f3n de las enfermedades mentales<\/em>\u00a0(1999),\u00a0Fundamentos de la psicopatolog\u00eda psicoanal\u00edtica<\/em>\u00a0(2005) and\u00a0Estudios sobre la psicosis<\/em>(2006).<\/p>\n

Fernando Colina<\/strong>\u00a0(Valladolid, 1947). Psychiatrist in charge of the psychiatry service at the Rio Hortega de Valladolid University Hospital. Colina has been turning his experiences as a psychiatrist into writing for years now. Written works include Escritos psic\u00f3ticos<\/em>\u00a0(1996),\u00a0Cinismo, discreci\u00f3n y desconfianza<\/em>\u00a0(2001) and\u00a0El saber delirante<\/em>\u00a0(2010). His most recent book,\u00a0Sobre la locura\u00a0<\/em>(2013), is a critical essay against trends in modern psychiatry and its propensity to medicate rather than listen to its patients.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda \u00c1lvarez<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Fernando Colina<\/strong>\u00a0belong to\u00a0La Otra Psiquiatr\u00eda<\/em>, which \u201cis mostly a group of friends. Apart from being friends, we\u2019re interested in studying psychopathology and psychoanalysis, in dealing with madness, working with medical institutions and training residents in Clinical Psychiatry and Psychology. It\u2019s not a professional or scientific association, and will never be a part of either of those.\u201d

\u00c1lvarez, Colina and psychiatrist Ram\u00f3n Esteban together founded the Valladolid group\u00a0Los Alienistas del Pisuerga<\/em>, which has published eight volumes that recover classical texts in psychopathology. \u201cAlienists who endeavour not to lose their liking for the clinic, their respect for their patients\u2019 subjectivity, extreme politeness, the rigour of combining humour, irony and misunderstanding with exact diagnoses and our firm support for a type of clinical practice which draws on history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Susana Talayero<\/strong>\u00a0(Bilbao, 1961). Artist based in Bilbao. She studied Fine Art with the UPV-EHU and lived in Rome from 1986 to 1996. Her work runs between drawing, painting and video. Her most recent solo exhibition was\u00a0Cabezonas<\/em>\u00a0(2014), at Galer\u00eda Carreras M\u00fagica, Bilbao.
