Black Bach Artsakh<\/i><\/b> (<\/b>Ayreen Anastas, Rene Gabri, Armenia 2021, 150\u2019<\/b>)<\/b>
\n<\/span>Black Bach Artsakh<\/span><\/i> is the name of a world. It lives in and as a film.<\/span><\/p>\n

If film is a document, then it bears witness to a place and a time. This film recalls events from a place called Artsakh in the year 2007, 13 years after the 1994 cessation of hostilities in the struggle for self-determination by Nagorno-Karabakh\u2019s Armenian inhabitants and 13 years before the 2020 invasion by the autocratic regime in Azerbaijan, to which the film is a response.<\/span><\/p>\n

On September 19, 2023, after a ten-month blockade depriving Artsakh\u2019s inhabitants of food, medicine, fuel and movement, a second major invasion by Azerbaijan \u2018succeeded\u2019 in the ethnic cleansing of Armenians from the existential territories they have inhabited for millennia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, to view the film is not only to inhabit this world, but also to care for it, keep it alive by keeping watch over it. In this way, it is not so much a film that resists the makers of war and those who deny and continue to justify genocide, instead it is a film that outlives them.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/b>Ayreen Anastas<\/b> and <\/span>Rene Gabri<\/b> are artists who have taken an interest in the cinematic experience as one that offers, like a clinic, a space for re-visioning our worlds, for caretaking, for nourishing the eyes and ears, for healing the souls, especially of those whose worlds remain threatened, whose voices have been silenced and assigned to oblivion by those who would imagine and place themselves at the center of history and in the seats of so-called power.<\/span><\/p>\n

Azar Mahmoudian<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>is an independent curator and educator.\u00a0<\/span>Thinking through the repetitions of contemporary political and social struggles, she is interested in the ways such \u201cchronic\u201d states could be understood as dilated times, containing multiple presents and presences, rather than as pathological loopholes and constancies of history. Her projects, such as the\u00a0multi-chapter film program\u00a0<\/span>Sensible Grounds<\/span><\/i>, or the exhibition<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>When Legacies Become <\/span><\/i>Debts<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>address\u00a0intergenerational time and transhistorical memory as infrastructures, questions that have, above all, been formative for her experiments with pedagogical spaces.\u00a0She runs the independent study program,\u00a0<\/span>A Summer School: For a Summer Yet to Come\u00a0<\/span><\/i>in Tehran and nearby places, and was part of the collective that organized\u00a0<\/span>Kaf\u00a0<\/span><\/i>in Tehran.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luis Moreno Caballud<\/b>. He was born in Fraga, Huesca, in 1976; he emigrated to New York in 2003. In the \u201coccupy the squares\u201d movements of 2011 he met friends with whom to maintain spaces of thought and life that attempt to interrupt the \u201cnormality\u201d of biocide capitalism. He works in a university in Philadelphia. He has investigated capitalist \u201cmodernization\u201d, the transformations of the rural world, the neoliberal crisis and the cultural hierarchies of the Spanish state. He published the essay\u00a0<\/span>Culturas de cualquiera\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(Acuarela, 2017) \u2013 English edition:\u00a0<\/span>Cultures of Anyone: Studies on Cultural Democratization in the Spanish Neoliberal\u00a0Crisis\u00a0<\/span><\/i>(Liverpool University Press, 2018),<\/span>\u00a0<\/b>and the\u00a0novels<\/span>\u00a0Temblor de un d\u00eda<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(Edaf, 2005) and\u00a0<\/span>La gran abundancia<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(La Oveja Roja, 2022).<\/span><\/p>\n
