{"id":1314,"date":"2013-11-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-11-03T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bulegoa.org\/web\/18-pictures-and-18-stories-fourth-stage-of-performance-in-resistance-by-isidoro-valcarcel-medina-at-cac-bretigny-bretigny\/"},"modified":"2017-09-11T12:47:51","modified_gmt":"2017-09-11T10:47:51","slug":"18-pictures-and-18-stories-fourth-stage-of-performance-in-resistance-by-isidoro-valcarcel-medina-at-cac-bretigny-bretigny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bulegoa.org\/en\/18-pictures-and-18-stories-fourth-stage-of-performance-in-resistance-by-isidoro-valcarcel-medina-at-cac-bretigny-bretigny\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201c18 pictures and 18 stories\u201d: fourth stage of \u201cPerformance in Resistance\u201d* by Isidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina at CAC Br\u00e9tigny, Br\u00e9tigny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>18 pictures and 18 stories<\/em> is a project of Bulegoa z\/b,  realized in collaboration with If I Can\u2019t Dance I Don\u2019t Want To Be Part  Of Your Revolution of Amsterdam, that presents and accompanies <em>Performance in Resistance<\/em> by Isidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina through 18 stories and on a journey to 6 cities.<\/p>\n<p>In Autumn 2010, If I Can\u2019t Dance invited Valc\u00e1rcel Medina and Bulegoa z\/b to take part in <em>Performance in Residence<\/em>,  a program that studies and researches performances from the past from  the perspective of current artistic practice, and that includes the  participation of Fl\u00e1vio de Carvalho e Inti Guerrero, Guy de Cointet and  Marie de Brugerolle, Matt Mullican and Vanessa Desclaux. Valc\u00e1rcel  Medina responded to the invitation with <em>Performance in Resistance<\/em>,  18 photographs mounted on passe-partout that show as many actions  carried out by the artist in different cities between 1965 and 1993. The  resulting set of images blurs the limits between the lived moment and  the document, between what happened and fiction. <em>Performance in Resistance<\/em>  also shows the guiding principle of Valc\u00e1rcel Medina\u2019s practice, his  refusal to submit to the conventions of any institution or discipline,  including the discipline of history. Such performative resistance arises  from the artist\u2019s conviction that his only material is his historical  time, and that the imagination \u201chides a wealth which drives the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>18 pictures and 18 stories<\/em> conceives investigation as an  imaginative practice which can transform and reactivate its objects of  study. The work takes the form of an itinerant framework which produces  narratives. 18 different people have been invited to take one of the 18  photographs that make up Performance in Resistance and propose a story.  The first stage of this specifically-conceived work by Valc\u00e1rcel Medina  was the Hetveem Theater, Amsterdam, in February 2012. There, three  narrators, Moosje Goosen, Emilio Moreno and Esteban Pujals Gesal\u00ed, told 3  stories based on 3 of the set of photographs: <em>Campa\u00f1a 1969<\/em> (Madrid, Murcia, 1969) <em>S\/T. Herramientas de Precisi\u00f3n<\/em> (Milan, 1987) and <em>136 manzanas de Asunci\u00f3n<\/em>  (Asunci\u00f3n, 1976). At the second stage at Bulegoa z\/b, Jos\u00e9 D\u00edaz Cuy\u00e1s,  Jaime Vallaure and Azucena Vieites told 3 stories based on <em>Pe\u00f3n al Rey<\/em> (Murcia, 1965), <em>El discurso sigue\u2026 su curso<\/em> (Granada, 1993) and <em>Retratos callejeros<\/em> (Barcelona, 1975).<\/p>\n<p>In its third stage, <em>Performance in Resistance<\/em> traveled to the Fundaci\u00f3 T\u00e0pies, Barcelona, on 6 June 2012. Nuria Enguita, Aimar P\u00e9rez and Manuel Mart\u00ednez retold <em>El cuadro<\/em> (Madrid, 1969), <em>La Visita<\/em> (Varias ciudades, 1974) and <em>El Sena por Par\u00eds<\/em> (Par\u00eds, 1975), respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth stage, at CAC B\u00e9tigny on Saturday 27 October, starts at  11am at the Passerelle Simone de Beauvoir, Paris, with Esther Ferrer\u2019s  narration of <em>El Sena por Par\u00eds<\/em> (Paris, 1975). It continues at  12am on a bus trip from Paris to Br\u00e9tigny with Jon  Mikel Euba\u2019s  narration, and ends at 2pm at the Edutainer in front of the CAC, with  Pierre Bal-Blanc\u2019s narration of <em>Marat\u00f3n<\/em> (Madrid, 1981).<\/p>\n<p>Next, <em>Performance in Resistance<\/em> will continue journeying to  BNV Producciones de Sevilla (6 November) the Festival Playground, STUK  (11 November), Lovaina and MAC, Museo de Arte Contempor\u00e1neo, Universidad  de S\u00e3o Paulo (29 November). Isidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina will be available  on the telephone to answer questions from the narrators or public.<\/p>\n<p>* Photographs: Roc\u00edo Are\u00e1n Guti\u00e9rrez, student at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pierre Bal-Blanc<\/strong> is the Director of CAC Br\u00e9tigny (Contemporary Art Center of Bretigny, Greater Paris) in France, where he has been running <em>Phalanst\u00e8re Project<\/em>  since 2003: a site-specific artist works series parallel to the  exhibitions and residencies program of the art center. Some of the many  projects he has curated are: <em>La Monnaie vivante-Living Currency<\/em> (Stuk Leuven Belgium &#8211; Tate Modern London -, Moma Warsaw \u2013 Poland, 6th Berlin Biennale) or <em>Draft Score for an Exhibition<\/em>  (Le Plateau Paris, Artissima Torino, Secession Vienna, Index  Stockholm), where he negotiated the current and historical analysis of  the body and strategies related to performance in the visual arts.<\/p>\n<p>( <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cacbretigny.com\">http:\/\/www.cacbretigny.com<\/a> )<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jon Mikel Euba<\/strong>\u00a0(Amorebieta, 1967) is an artist and lives in Bilbao. Solo exhibitions include <em>PRIMER PROFORMA 2010. BADIOLA EUBA PREGO<\/em>, MUSAC, Le\u00f3n (2010) and <em>Kill\u2019em all + Fiesta 4 Puertas<\/em>  at Fundaci\u00f3 T\u00e0pies, Barcelona (2003). His work has been included at  Manifesta IV Frankfurt (2002), Istanbul Biennale (2005), Busan Biennale  (2004), and Venice Biennale (2003). Performances by him have been staged  at De Appel and Stedlijk Museum Bureau, Amsterdam (2008), Project Arts  Centre, Dubl\u00edn (2009),\u00a0and Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven as part of\u00a0If I  Can&#8217;t Dance. Edition III &#8211; Masquerade\u00a0(2010) and\u00a0Valpara\u00edso  Intervenciones, Valpara\u00edso (2010).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Esther Ferrer<\/strong> (1937, Donostia-San Sebasti\u00e1n) is an  artist and lives in Par\u00eds. In 1967 she made her first performance; this  ephemeral practice runs through the body of her work. She has produced  objects, photographic works and systems based on series of prime  numbers.  In 1966 she joined ZAJ, an experimental group founded in 1964  by Ram\u00f3n Barce, Juan Hidalgo and Walter Marchetti and disbanded in 1996.  In 1999 her work was exhibited at the Spanish Pavilion, Venice  Biennale.
