{"id":1312,"date":"2013-11-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-11-05T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bulegoa.org\/web\/18-pictures-and-18-stories-sixth-stage-of-performance-in-resistance-by-isidoro-valcarcel-medina-at-playground-festival-at-stuk-leuven\/"},"modified":"2017-09-11T12:47:51","modified_gmt":"2017-09-11T10:47:51","slug":"18-pictures-and-18-stories-sixth-stage-of-performance-in-resistance-by-isidoro-valcarcel-medina-at-playground-festival-at-stuk-leuven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bulegoa.org\/en\/18-pictures-and-18-stories-sixth-stage-of-performance-in-resistance-by-isidoro-valcarcel-medina-at-playground-festival-at-stuk-leuven\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201c18 pictures and 18 stories\u201d: sixth stage of \u201cPerformance in Resistance\u201d* by Isidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina at Playground Festival at STUK, Leuven"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>18 pictures and 18 stories<\/em> is a project of Bulegoa z\/b,  realized in collaboration with If I Can\u2019t Dance I Don\u2019t Want To Be Part  Of Your Revolution of Amsterdam, that presents and accompanies\u00a0<em>Performance in Resistance<\/em>\u00a0by Isidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina through 18 stories and on a journey to 7 cities.<\/p>\n<p>In Autumn 2010, If I Can\u2019t Dance invited Valc\u00e1rcel Medina and Bulegoa z\/b to take part in\u00a0<em>Performance in Residence,<\/em>\u00a0a  program that studies and researches performances from the past from the  perspective of current artistic practice, and that includes the  participation of Fl\u00e1vio de Carvalho e Inti Guerrero, Guy de Cointet and  Marie de Brugerolle, Matt Mullican and Vanessa Desclaux. Valc\u00e1rcel  Medina responded to the invitation with <em>Performance in Resistance,<\/em>\u00a018  photographs mounted on passe-partout that show as many actions carried  out by the artist in different cities between 1965 and 1993. The  resulting set of images blurs the limits between the lived moment and  the document, between what happened and fiction.\u00a0<em>Performance in Resistance<\/em>\u00a0also  shows the guiding principle of Valc\u00e1rcel Medina\u2019s practice, his refusal  to submit to the conventions of any institution or discipline,  including the discipline of history. Such performative resistance arises  from the artist\u2019s conviction that his only material is his historical  time, and that the imagination \u201chides a wealth which drives the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>18 pictures and 18 stories<\/em>\u00a0conceives investigation as an  imaginative practice which can transform and reactivate its objects of  study. The work takes the form of an itinerant framework which produces  narratives. 18 different people have been invited to take one of the 18  photographs that make up\u00a0<em>Performance in Resistance<\/em>\u00a0and propose a story.<\/p>\n<p>The first stage of this specifically-conceived work by Valc\u00e1rcel  Medina was the Hetveem Theater, Amsterdam, in February 2012. There,  three narrators, Moosje Goosen, Emilio Moreno and Esteban Pujals Gesal\u00ed,  told 3 stories based on 3 of the set of photographs:\u00a0<em>Campa\u00f1a 1969<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Campaign 1969,<\/em>\u00a0Madrid, Murcia, 1969)\u00a0<em>S\/T. Herramientas de Precisi\u00f3n<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Untitled. Precision Tools,<\/em>\u00a0Milano, 1987) and\u00a0<em>136 manzanas de Asunci\u00f3n<\/em>\u00a0(<em>136 blocks of Asunci\u00f3n,<\/em>\u00a0Asunci\u00f3n, 1976).<\/p>\n<p>At the second stage, on 20th April at Bulegoa z\/b, Jos\u00e9 D\u00edaz Cuy\u00e1s, Jaime Vallaure and Azucena Vieites told 3 stories based on\u00a0<em>Pe\u00f3n al Rey<\/em>\u00a0(<em>King\u2019s Pawn Game,<\/em>\u00a0Murcia, 1965),\u00a0<em>Retratos callejeros<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Street portraits,<\/em>\u00a0Barcelona, 1975), and\u00a0<em>El discurso sigue\u2026 su curso<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The discourse continues&#8230; its course,<\/em>\u00a0Granada, 1993).<\/p>\n<p>In its third stage,\u00a0<em>Performance in Resistance<\/em>\u00a0traveled to the Fundaci\u00f3 T\u00e0pies, Barcelona, on 6 June 2012. Nuria Enguita, Aimar P\u00e9rez and Manuel Mart\u00ednez retold\u00a0<em>El cuadro<\/em>\u00a0(Madrid, 1969),\u00a0<em>La Visita<\/em>\u00a0(many cities, 1974) and\u00a0<em>El Sena por Par\u00eds<\/em>\u00a0(Paris, 1975), respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In the fourth stage, at CAC Br\u00e9tigny, on 27 October, Esther Ferrer talked about\u00a0<em>El Sena por Par\u00eds<\/em>\u00a0(Paris, 1975), Jon Mikel Euba about\u00a0<em>El hombre de la capa<\/em>\u00a0(New York, 1967), and Pierre Bal-Blanc about\u00a0<em>Marat\u00f3n<\/em>\u00a0(Madrid, 1981).<\/p>\n<p>At the fifth stage at BNV Producciones, Seville, on 6 November, Pedro G. Romero, Isa\u00edas Gri\u00f1olo and Miren Jaio narrated <em>Encuesta en la cola del besamanos del Cristo de Medinaceli<\/em>\u00a0(Madrid, 1978),\u00a0<em>El pintor en la calle<\/em>\u00a0(Madrid, 1978) and\u00a0<em>12 ejercicios de medici\u00f3n sobre la ciudad de C\u00f3rdoba (J)<\/em>\u00a0(Cordoba, 1974), respectively.<\/p>\n<p>At the sixth stage at Playground Festival at STUK, Leuven on, 11 November, Koen Brams will talk about <em>Retratos callejeros<\/em> (Barcelona, 1975), Dora Garc\u00eda about <em>Hombres anuncio<\/em> (Madrid, 1976) and Myriam Van Imschoot about <em>S\/T<\/em> (known as <em>Paso de peatones<\/em>) (many cities, 1971).<\/p>\n<p><em>18 pictures and 18 stories<\/em> and <em>Performance in Resistance<\/em> finalize their journey on 29 November at MAC \u2013 Museum of Contemporary Art, University of S\u00e2o Paulo. <em>Performance in Resistance<\/em> will be shown with <em>A Cidade e o Estrangeiro<\/em> (<em>The City and the Foreigner<\/em>).  The exhibition, curated by Cristina Freire, recovers documentary  registers of the monographic exhibition of the same name by Valc\u00e1rcel  Medina at the MAC in 1976.<br \/>\nIsidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina will be available on the telephone to answer questions from the narrators or public.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Photographs: Roc\u00edo Are\u00e1n Guti\u00e9rrez,<\/strong>\u00a0student at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Koen Brams<\/strong> is a freelance researcher and writer. He is the former editor-in-chief of <em>De Witte Raaf<\/em>  (1992 \u2013 2000) and former director of the Jan van Eyck Academie (2000 \u2013  2011). Together with Dirk P\u00fcltau he conducts a research project about  art in Belgium since 1945. Recent publications:\u00a0<em>The Encyclopedia of Fictional Artists<\/em>\u00a0(JRP\u00a0Ringier, 2010);\u00a0<em>The clandestine in the work of Jef Cornelis<\/em>\u00a0(together with Dirk P\u00fcltau), Argos\/ De Witte Raaf \/Jan van Eyck Academie\/ Marcelum Boxtareos, 2010;\u00a0<em>Matt Mullican: Im Gespr\u00e4ch\/ Conversations<\/em>\u00a0(together with Dirk P\u00fcltau), DuMont, K\u00f6ln, 2011; and two issues of <em>De Witte Raaf<\/em>  about the \u2018arrival\u2019, the \u2018assimilation\u2019 and the \u2018farewell\u2019 of  postmodernism in Belgium and The Netherlands (nr. 155, january \u2013  february 2012 &#038; nr. 156, march \u2013 april 2012).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dora Garc\u00eda<\/strong> lives and works in Barcelona. She  studied at Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, and has had solo exhibitions at the  Kunsthalle Bern (2010), the Galerie f\u00fcr Zeitgen\u00f6ssische Kunst, Leipzig  (2007), the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sof\u00eda, Madrid (2005 \u2013 06) and  in\u00a0SMAK, Ghent (2006), curated by Eva Wittockx. Garc\u00eda has participated  in the Biennale di Venezia (2011), the Bienal de S\u00e3o Paulo (2010), the  Biennale of Sydney (2008), and Skulptur Projekte M\u00fcnster (2007).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Myriam Van Imschoot<\/strong> is a writer and performance  artist based in Brussels. She works in various media with archives,  voice, memory and landscape. At the moment Van Imschoot makes a cycle of  works dedicated to voice and landscape projects, with the support of a  trajectory grant of the Flemish Community Commission. Her interest is in  modes of communication that stretch time and space. Drawn to art on the  brink of ephemerality, she is equally curious about what persists  notwithstanding \u2013 in the form of traces, debris, echoes. Her work was  rewarded with research grants from Die H\u00f6ge, Bellagio Foundation,  Flemish Community Commission and Jan van Eyck Academie.
