The invitation arrived with its object of study clearly marked out: the artist Isidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina (Murcia 1937). The first question to arise was: how is a research project to be undertaken when its object so clearly belongs to the here and now?<\/p>\n<p>The nature of Isidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina\u2019s practice makes the question even more peremptory. From its beginnings in the mid-1950s, several premises have guided his insistent and almost traceless activity: to show and expose the conventions and inertias with which systems operate (the art institution amongst them); to follow the principle of \u201cexhausting the possibilities of the issue at hand to its final consequences\u201d \u2013 in this way taking from scientific research the rigour of its methodology but not its objectives; and, above all, the obligation of the artist to \u201crespond to his historical time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The invitation from If I Can\u2019t Dance comes during the initial phase of Bulegoa z\/b. The latter has made use of the occasion to invite Isidoro Valc\u00e1rcel Medina to help it in its process of definition through the elaboration of a brief glossary of the terms dealt with in \u201cForms of Formless Knowledge\u201d.
