“Study of a Mobile Object in Space and Time: visit by Isidoro Valcárcel Medina to Bulegoa z/b”

In September 2010, Bulegoa z/b received an invitation from If I Can’t Dance I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution to take part in “Performance in Residence”, a project that aims to reactivate performances of the past through research. The invitation arrived with its object of study clearly marked out: the artist Isidoro Valcárcel Medina (Murcia 1937). The first question to arise was: how is a research project to be undertaken when its object so clearly belongs to the here and now?
The nature of Isidoro Valcárcel Medina’s practice makes the question even more peremptory. From its beginnings in the mid-1950s, several premises have guided his insistent and almost traceless activity: to show and expose the conventions and inertias with which systems operate (the art institution amongst them); to follow the principle of “exhausting the possibilities of the issue at hand to its final consequences” – in this way taking from scientific research the rigour of its methodology but not its objectives; and, above all, the obligation of the artist to “respond to his historical time”.
The invitation from If I Can’t Dance comes during the initial phase of Bulegoa z/b. The latter has made use of the occasion to invite Isidoro Valcárcel Medina to help it in its process of definition through the elaboration of a brief glossary of the terms dealt with in “Forms of Formless Knowledge”. Researchers and objects of study thus intersect in a three way relationship of which this visit forms part, preceding as it does the visit that Isidoro Valcárcel Medina and Bulegoa z/b will make to If I Can’t Dance next 18 February.
